The CARD DUMP process is a workflow I've created which revolves around the Roland Edirol CF card recorder and the 256Mb (I believe) CF card capacity. You are permitted to store roughly six hours of material on each life cycle of this particular storage size, and I feel that's a fitting block to encapsulate chapters of recordings into. Too short of a gathering period and you can end up with little or nothing seeing as the material captured will likely be repetitive and uniform in its makeup (guitar/guitar+ drums hammering a consistant concept). Too long and of course editing becomes a massive undertaking and the potential for detachment from the ideas result of such a long turnaround period is heightened. It typically takes maybe two weeks to fill up six hours of material, although this can fluctuate depending on a few factors - are you doing any longpan audio recordings of tapes, etc. I'm currently in the midst of my fifth card dump gathering period at time of writing and any plan I had to finish one candy bar before opening the other has flown out the window. The revised plan is to gradually single out loops and process-of- elimination them down while retaining record of everything into candidates for use in looping experiments.
