With the acquisition of the Alesis Datadisk, a studio appliance which is categorically a sequencer despite possessing no interface for composition, I am prompted to refine my outlines / classifications for sequencing devices altogether. As the Alesis is a unit whose sequencing capability is an afterthought, and lacks any abilities for constructing MIDI sequences (adding to its practicality and utilitarian identity), it is a utility for strict capture/storage (encapsulatory/documentative/playback) of MIDI information sourced elsewhere. It is humorous to think that just one week ago I was still pining over the convenience that waiting four minutes to boot an Atari ST, load Cubase and save/load a floppy would offer - while I still will aspire to the completion and security of that architecture, the Datadisk is certifiably the permanent realization of my needs in the facilitation/administrative department of MIDI. Compositional sequencing - Sequencing on a system which is receptive to editing and revision Administrative sequencing - Prepared files being played back undeviatingly.
